I need your help...

So...cruising through Home Goods a few months ago I came across this clock (no, that's not Home Goods in the background...that's my store room),

It's about 3 feet across and has a pretty classic design...for only SEVEN bucks...woo hoo!!!

Now, despite the lack of high ceilings in my home - and the lack of hands on the clock - I thought seven dollars was a steal and snatched it up.  And while I still love it in theory, it's been sitting my garage all this time waiting for inspiration to strike.

I've found some pics on the internet that I love...

{from Pottery Barn}

{also from Pottery Barn}

{from My Uncommon Slice of Suburbia.  Even if you're not interested in the clock thing, her blog is awesome...go check it out!}

The clock face is made of a pretty thin sheet of plastic and is a little dinged up.  So just adding hands and calling it a day probably won't work.  The idea is to distress the clock face MORE so that the dings look intentional.  And maybe like wood.

And even though I know this, I'm still stumped.

So I'm asking you...what do you think?  Should I glaze the face a little?  And how does one glaze plastic anyway?  Should I even bother adding hands?  Should I get rid of the clock face altogether and make it into a chalkboard?  What would you do?

Thank you in advance for your advice!  :)

Maggie, Alright I had to think about this...but if it was me, I would either try to glaze it or dry brush it with a light brown color...adding water when needed. The plastic should take either one..although you will need to put a protective layer of something over it...matte sealer etc. I would go the chalkboard route as a last resort...while I LOVE chalkboards..finding pretty clock faces is hard. As for the hands...I wouldn't be in a rush to do it...but if I found or made a set they would definetely make a welcome addition. Can't wait to see what you do with it! Good luck and great bargin find! Amy

I agree with Amy, Maggie. I would make (or purchase) some chalk paint (because you can paint anything with that w/out priming), make sure it's watered down a little, and dry brush the face and the frame of it. Then, go back over it and lightly sand it. If need be, you could always repaint (or Sharpie) the numbers again...or distress them, too! And I do believe the Michael's and/or Hobby Lobby carry clock hands kits. Good luck with this! It'll look fabulous! :)

Visiting over from FJI...When I saw the picture, I first thought it looked like metal (white tin or something) which can get dinged and still look great. I think maybe add some hands and live it with it for a while and see what you think. You could also visit Meridian Road where she made some tags look like aged metal and maybe go that route. I've pasted the link to her post about it. Good luck!
